kingspiration: How do you measure success (Monday Inspirations)
The word “success” is one of the commonly used words these days. In fact, it is not strange to hear people say they want to be successful in life, but the shocking part of it is that majority of these people don’t even know the meaning of what they say.
It is not also uncommon to hear comments like “Mr.A is more successful than Mr.B” and I ask how do you measure success? What parameters do you use? How do you determine who is more successful than the other? Whose definition of success are you operating with?
The society has given us a stereotypical definition of success as garnering of wealth and fame and so when some people say they want to be successful in life ,what they mean is being wealthy and famous.
So they pursue wealth and fame at the expense of the things that truly hold meaning in their lives .
No wonder, they still feel unfulfilled, unsatisfied and empty despite their wealth and fame, because they have been pursuing the society’s definition of success. They have not sat down to define what success means for them.
The meaning of success is personal and individualized. what it means to me could be different from what it does to you. It is subjective and varies from person to person.
While Ben Carson may consider himself a successful surgeon for saving lives with his gifted hands, another surgeon considers himself successful for being heavily paid to do his job.
It doesn’t mean one is more successful than the other, it only means they have different definition of success.
While one single lady would consider herself successful when she eventually gets married and have a blissful home, another single lady sees herself as successful when she attains a celebrity status.
It doesn’t mean one is more successful than the other ,it only means they have different perception of success.
You see why it’s folly to measure your success by what others have achieved and why it’s necessary to define what success means to you?
Being successful means accomplishing your desired visions and goals. It’s about what gives you joy and fulfillment.
You can still build business empires, have the best job titles, fame and all that and still feel miserable and unfulfilled if you are not operating in the area of your calling.
If we continue to live by another man’s definition of success, we will end up frustrated.
Seek for inward fulfillment and not the outward symbols of success as defined by the society.
