Nigerian pastor ‘reburies’ George Floyd in Imo State

A Nigerian clergyman, identified as Pastor Humble Okoro, has organized a fresh funeral service for George Floyd, an African American whose death in police custody spawned global outrage.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died May 25 in Minneapolis after a police officer held him down by the neck with his knee for more than eight minutes.

He was originally buried in Houston, Texas, on June 9, 2020.

The preacher said he traced Floyd’s ancestral root to Mbaise in Imo State, claiming that his native name was ‘Obinna’, according to Leadership – a popular Nigerian newspaper that carried the news on Tuesday July 28.

Pastor Okoro while carrying out the funeral in the community was quoted to have said:

“I have traced the ancestral root of George Obinna Floyd to Umuoffor kindred in Obokwu obibi Aboh Mbaise Imo State and I feel so happy now that we have reburied him alongside with his ancestors.”

The official memorial service was held at the Fountain of Praise church, attended by some 500 guests including politicians and celebrities.

His coffin was taken from the church driven in a motorcade to the Houston Memorial Gardens where he was to be buried beside his mother.

Four police officers involved have been sacked and charged over his death.
